The Australian Stock Saddle
and the Saddlers that made them
.jpg)
Mr Hodge of Hill End, NSW in c1871. This gentleman demonstrates a typical bush saddler of the day. The saddle on the left, on the stand, is a close copy of the famous 1865 Wagga saddle (with a more upright, slimmer knee pad, however the prominent thigh pad is missing). Note how he has blocked the knee and thigh pad onto the left and right hand side flap (on either side of him on the ground). The light, finished saddle to his right was more the design of saddle being made in this era, with a rounded knee pad. The saddle in the background has a prominent knee pad and the wear on it shows that it is already a fairly old saddle, even for that time.
