The Australian Stock Saddle
and the Saddlers that made them
JOSEPH PIERCE ALVIN 1872 - 1949
Joseph Alvin was born in Lucknow, Victoria 1872, and died on 10 November 1949.
Little is known of his apprenticeship, however he advertised as a saddler in 1893 in Bairnsdale, Victoria.
Joseph Alvin has been featured on this site for the simple reason that he was a typical saddler in this timeframe. Local, and word of mouth only, kept his business going. Even in a small town like Bairnsdale, there could be up to two or three saddlers plying their trade.
None of his children learnt the trade from their father, however he may have passed his knowledge onto another individual working under him.
A 1940's saddle by Alvin is in a private collection.
